We are offering a solution to the dilema of the hi-tech experience, we call our adventures - a "hi-touch" experience. We have a variety of exciting discoveries to choose from. Whether you choose to try your luck at our panning rough discoveries or choose to break open a geode that is millions of years old, we guarantee, there's nothing boring about the adventures that we offer here.

Geodes come in many sizes, shapes, and mineral varieties. The larger sizes (such as the ones on either side pictured left and right) are called, "cathedral" geodes. They are filled with amethyst quartz druzy crystals. Amethyst can range in shade from very pale to extremely dark. The large geode pictured here was cut in half and created its winged shape. They reside within our Gold Mine Gift Emporium and are available for purchase.

You can choose to take your unbroken geode home and break it at a later time, give it as a gift to a very special someone, or, you can crack it open using our custom designed "Geode Cracker" at our location.

What are "Geodes"?

Geodes are rocks that are plain on the outside but can have beautiful crystals on the inside. The word geode, in the Greek language, means "shape of the earth". Geodes vary in their shape, many are round like earth or they can be oblong like an egg. Their size can range from a couple of inches or several feet in size. geode

Geodes are created in the hollow areas of soil such as animal burrows or tree roots. They are also formed in the bubbles in volcanic rock. Over time, dissolved minerals seep into a hollow area and harden into an outer shell creating the geode. The minerals continue to form on the inside walls of the shell, growing towards the center. The most common dissolved mineral is quartz, but amethyst and other minerals are also found.

Which ever shape geode you have, scientists know and acknowledge that it can take hundreds of millions of years for the space inside a geode to be filled, and many geodes remain partly hollow. A geode which is completely filled with crystals is called a nodule. Agate-filled nodules are called thunder eggs.
